Reflection Paper On Psychological Studies - 975 Words

This year, I participated in 20 hours (20 SONA credits) worth of psychology studies, which consisted of experimental, survey/questionnaire, and qualitative methods. In this reflective report, I am going to discuss my experience of participating in psychological studies, as a part of the Psychology in Action module, and demonstrate how this has increased my understanding of both methodological issues in the research. I am also going to evaluate the methodologies that were used, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses in answering the questions under consideration. The first study I took part in was a brain stimulation, which looked at attention. It took place over 3 consecutive days and took approximately 1 to 1.5 hours per day. I needed to fill out some questionnaires and do some computer tasks, on each day. While doing some of the tasks, a small current was applied to my scalp using a transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) machine. This small current is capable of changing the electrical properties of the brain. TES is a harmless procedure which is commonly used in psychological experiments. The after-effects are only temporary, and it was used as part of someone’s Doctoral research, to see how TES affects attention. I was given 5 SONA participation credits. The recruitment process was very simple; I simply had to email the researcher and sign up for the time slots. Literary Analysis Essay Parallel Paths by Kevin Clark We would like to believe that love brings us together, but this is not always the case as Kevin Clark implies in the first two lines of â€Å"Parallel Paths† when he states â€Å"Today you’re lucky, in love with your wife for the first time in weeks†. We lead very hectic lives and in the mist of all the commotion we tend to forget to pencil in time for our loved ones, the people we are supposed to keep near and dear. The poem â€Å"Parallel Paths† by Kevin Clark is about a marriage that is strained. In this poem Kevin Clark uses several metaphors that reflect on the importance of maintaining a marriage by devoting time and effort. The metaphors that will be discussed in this essay†¦show more content†¦It is important to look for that hope, because where there is hope there is help. If you really want your marriage to last you have to be willing to fight for it, even though there are no guarantees. You have to put everything else aside a nd take the time to focus in on the issues and try to fix them to determine if the marriage can move forward and the problems can be left in the past. In line 37 Clark uses the metaphor â€Å"a single mutable wildflower†. This single flower reflects that there are no guarantees in a marriage. When you try to work on issues in your marriage it is possible that the table could turn either way. The issues may be fixable and then again maybe not but you want know until you try. If you only look at the negative things then you will have a hard time fixing the problems. If you look at the negative things with a positive attitude, an attitude of I can fix this, then who knows what might happen. But one thing is for sure I would feel better walking away knowing that I have tried to mend the fences instead of just walking away. When you walk away from a relationship with unresolved issues, those same issues have the tendency to follow you into your next relationship and then w hat; you walk away from that relationship too? Causes And Effects Of Obesity In America - 870 Words

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as having a BMI over 30 (CDC). In the year 2000, roughly 30 percent of 20 year olds in America were obese. By 2003 that number had risen to 32 percent. That is a small window of increase. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, the percent of obese Americans doubled. This means that in 1970, only 15 percent of Americans were obese, and in the thirty years following, obesity took a sharp rise. In 1960, 13 percent of Americans were obese. The mean percent rise per year in the 1960s was 0.2 percent. The mean percent rise per year in the three decades following the 60s was 0.5, and then in 2000, the percent rise per year again increased, this time to 0.6 percent. This would represent a real burden for some families† (Harvard). For the average American family, this could pose a serious problem. The median household income in America in 2015 was $57,000 (United States Census Bereau). The average family size in 2016 was above 3 people (United States Census Bureau). This means that for a common American family, the increased spending is almost $2000, or 3% of their yearly income. That is a significant amount of money that most Americans would rather save, or simply spend on things that they deem more important than a healthier diet. Childhood obesity can lead to a life long struggle with obesity. The author, William Zinsser, was a writer and editor for the New York Herald Tribune and developed this book out of a nonfiction writing course he taught at Yale. Zinsser writes with refreshing simplicity, humor, and encouraging frankness. We will write a custom essay sample on The book by William Zinsser On Willing Well or any similar topic only for you Order Now He’s not one of these writers who pretends that the words just flow; he readily admits to delay, paralysis, and even perspiring over challenging projects. â€Å"Writing is hard work†¦Remember this in moments of despair. If you find that writing is hard, it’s because it is hard.† This guide includes the entire process of writing. Chapters address a spectrum of central issues: principles, methods, forms, and attitudes. Throughout the first chapter, reader can see that all of us write differently; we have different styles, we write to different audiences, and we have our own sense of humor. â€Å"On Writing Well† offers a very large scope of techniques and styles centered around enhancing writing, and helping to convey the simplest, most effective message possible. After the first chapter, a reader will remember that simplicity is always the best option when writing. Today, our society is too perplexed in making our words clear. So perplexed, that we often confuse each other. Keeping a straightforward message is not only important, it is realistic. One should think of the process as cutting and burning a forest. Just as time is involved in allowing that forest to re-grow, we must take time to rebuild our sentences. The next chapter deals with the reinforcement of what we just learned. To make our writing as strong as possible, we have to get rid of everything that isn’t needed. Many sentences are too overloaded with adjectives. It is interesting, but true, that the political field has frequently used evasive wording and overloaded sentences to try and cover up the meaning of the truth. The ideas must be quick and to the point, so that to be easier to understand. Decorating sentences with extra words won’t earn any respect, in fact, they may do just the opposite. The book also discusses the importance of developing your own style. Zinsser says that although it sounds paradoxical, before we can develop an unmistakable style, we have to cut down our writing to the bare minimum. A very convincing passage was: â€Å"Few people realize how badly they write. Nobody has shown them how much excess or murkiness has crept into their style and how it obstructs what they are trying to say.† Psychology also makes a somewhat unexpected appearance in the text. â€Å"Writing is an act of ego, and you might as well admit it. Use its energy to keep yourself going.† To be able to write well, one must be comfortable with yourself. When we are relaxed, we write better, and the reader notices it. The sections on principles and methods include the usual suspects-conceiving a compelling opening paragraph, focusing on the audience, achieving unity of voice, choosing words carefully, ending with a punch, and (everyone’s favorite) revising. His chapters on forms offer guidelines for writing in specific fields-business, science, sports, humor, the arts. The final chapters on attitude discuss psychological aspects of writing: embracing the sound of your authentic voice; enjoyment, fear, and confidence; how an infatuation with the idea of a finished product can impede your progress; a writer’s decisions; and finally, an exhortation to write the highest quality work you can. The chapter on a writer’s decisions offers a glimpse into Zinsser’s critical thought process for his own writing: he parcels out paragraphs of an article he wrote for a travel magazine, annotated with detailed commentary about the editorial choices he made as he wrote. Author takes on an historical perspective of nonfiction as literature, if only to serve as an inspiration to developing nonfiction writers. He marks the change in society from radio to television, and discusses that with the developing need for accurate information. The style he uses is direct and simple, free of confusion, the product of self-restraint. Varied with the author’s insights and anecdotes are plentiful samples of writing both strong and weak, varying in style and genre, to illustrate the principles discussed in a given section. In addition to numerous excerpts of his own work, he shares selections from highly regarded writers like Joan Didion, E.B. White, Joseph Mitchell, John Updike, and Cynthia Ozick. My one reclamation with the book is this: I do not agree with Zinsser’s advice on dealing with gendered pronouns (he favors masculine pronouns when there is no graceful way to avoid choosing a gender-somehow using an occasional â€Å"she† fails to occur to him) and he sporadically refers to collective humanity as â€Å"man.† However, beyond that, I find his advice flawless and his writing an excellent model of the principles he sticks to. Euphemism is the lubricant of communication in our daily life, business and political talking, even in the international negotiations. Euphemisms are powerful linguistic devices which â€Å"are embedded so deeply in our language that few of us, even those who pride themselves on being plainspoken, ever get through a day without using them. † (Rawson, 1981:1). However, every language has its own euphemism; it is closely related with the language, culture, and taboo, so does English, and Chinese as well. For better studying these two languages and knowing more about these two countries, there is a great need for us to compare English and Chinese euphemisms, and find out ways to translation them, so we can learn both two language much better. 1. Basic study on euphemism 1. Definition of euphemism Euphemism is a hot research issues in the field of linguistics, scholars at home and broad have defined euphemism differently. The word â€Å"euphemism† comes from a Greek word, â€Å"eu-† meaning â€Å"good† and â€Å"-pheme† meaning â€Å"speech† or â€Å"saying†, and thus its literary meaning is â€Å"a good speech or good saying†. Euphemism is a kind of polite and roundabout mode of expression. 3. Euphemism is used to soften or beautify the unpleasantness of reality. 1. 2 review of euphemism Much research has been done on euphemism because of its prominence in language. A lot of great works came into being during the study of euphemism, which lay a foundation for further research. In 1936, in his book The American Language, American linguist, Mencken, fully discussed why hundreds of euphemisms had been born and become popular on the basis of American history and social cultural background. His book is a valuable legacy for euphemism study. In 1981, British linguist Hugh Rawson compiled A Dictionary of Euphemisms and Other Double talks, which embodies the achievements of research on euphemisms over the decades by many British and American linguists. More important, in its ten–page–long preface, Hugh Rawson not only traced the history of euphemism, but also widely accounted for characteristics of euphemism as well as its definition, classification, and scope of use. Compared with those flourishing studies on euphemism in western countries, Chinese scholars’ theories on euphemism seem rare, although euphemism in China has quite a long history and we can find the earliest recordation in The Book of Songs( ). Scientific and systematic research had not been done in this field until several decades ago. In 1976, Chinese scholar Chen Wangdao ( ,1976) published the book Introduction to Rhetoric. He gave a definition to euphemism and studied euphemism from the angle of rhetoric. Euphemism study in terms of rhetoric is not restricted to the lexicon level, but is extended to the level of sentence and discourse. From the 70s to the 80s of the 20th century, western theories of linguistics were introduced into China in succession. Inspired by the newly introduced theories, some Chinese scholars expanded the scope of euphemism study into the perspective of social functions. The most famous ones among those scholars are Chen Yuan ( ,1983),who published the book Sociolinguistics, which contributes a lot to the study and analysis of euphemism. In the following years, a number of Chinese scholars published many articles to air their views on euphemism from different angles, such as Yu Yalun ( ,1984), Li Guonan ( ,1989), Shu Dingfang ( ,1989), etc.. All of these papers have widened our vision and enriched the study of euphemism. 1. 3. Language and euphemism Hugh Rawson (1981:3) pointed out the close relation between language and euphemism, â€Å"Euphemisms are embedded so deeply in our language that few of us, even those who pride themselves on being plain-spoken, ever get through a day without using them. The relation between language and euphemism is so intrinsically close that it is impossible to study one without an analysis of the other. Firstly, euphemism is one form of language; we can derive euphemism from family talks, official meetings, literary words, scribbles on walls, telephone talks, television programs, letters, cards, advertisements, E-mails, and so on. Secondly, language is the vehicle of euphemism. Euphemism exists in every language. To some extent, we can say that where there is language, there is euphemism. Thirdly, euphemism contributes to language usage. It is the polite and indirect coverer of some unpleasant language. 2. Comparison between Chinese and English Euphemisms Though Chinese euphemism and English euphemism are both used to lubricate the languages for better understanding, they also have their respective means of formation, different use range and culture influents 2.. 1. in terms of formation As for their formation, by comparing them from phonetic, lexical, grammatical, and rhetorical angles, we can learn more about Chinese euphemism and English euphemism. 2. 1. 1. Phonetic device Phonetic distortion is the most popular way of euphemism both in Chinese and English. Phonetic distortion refers to the changing of a sound in word for the purpose of euphemizing. In English Phonetic distortion includes abbreviation, reduplication, distortion of pronunciation, etc. There are abbreviations like â€Å"TB† for â€Å"tuberculosis†, â€Å"vamp† for â€Å"vampire†, â€Å"JC† for â€Å"Jesus Christ†, â€Å"WC† for â€Å"Water Closet†, â€Å"SOB† for â€Å"son-of-a-bitch†, â€Å"BS† for â€Å"bullshit†, and so on. There is reduplication like â€Å"Pee-pee† or â€Å"Wee-wee† for â€Å"piss†, and there are distortions of pronunciations like â€Å"Gripes† for â€Å"Christ†, â€Å"Gad† for â€Å"God† and so forth. In Chinese, the most common phonetic distortion is the homophone.

Impact of Audit Committee Characteristics

Question: Discuss about the Impact of Audit Committee Characteristics. Answer: Introduction: With the consideration of the several risks for the companies, the involvement of the insurance business helps in the creation of the study of the business risks that causes the failure of the company. The exposures are presented for the entire risks that are offered with the creation of the insurance policies. The insurance firms can also handle the risks easily with the creation of the coverage of the policies and henceforth in this undertaken case study of HIH insurance company; it is observed that the policies are gathered as per the risks proved for the company (Emmerich, Racz and Unger, 2006). Besides this the great elevation of the compensation are made for the insurance workers in the market of the California which seemed to be a most important part of the risk. With this, the company has faced a lot amount of the losses that are proved to be exposures for the high risk prone zones and thereby the exposures are made for the company. The inherent risk helps in the creation of the possibilities of misleading and the incorrect information within an accounting statement provides the outcomes from something other than the unsuccessful management of the managerial accounting. With the consideration of the examples regarding the inherent risks, it is perceived to utilize the amount of the judgement for the approximation with the involvement of the financial tools are made. In this given case study of HIH limited Company, the shares are perceived with the creation of dropping of the share prices and thereby the poor financial outcomes as well as the improvement of financial outcomes are claimed for the fund insurance. Henceforth the outcome throughout the year 2000 for HIH insurance company has paid $1.7 million to the auditors for the services. As per the given case study of the HIH private limited, the financial performance seemed to be mismanaged by the seniors managers of the organisation and thereby the company halted with the creation of the fall of the performance. The share price of the company had fallen sharply that impacted the shareholders. For the improvement of this position, the appropriate auditing of the balance sheet is made with the remuneration of the huge quantity of the auditing services. The auditor also helps in gaining the negative performance for the company HIH and thereby the creditors and clients face the worst conditions of the company (Ianniello, 2011). Therefore as per the rules and the regulations, auditor is responsible for the downfall of the company and thereby the company and the auditor are responsible for paying all the debts of the clients and the creditors. The condition depicts the act of the intelligence which seems to be described in this case and thereby this act describes the breaching of the duty of care with the harming of the person. In this case of the HIH, the facts and the findings determine the harms that provide the ways of the harm. The solicitor Bruce Dennis fought the case against Andersen. Thus it also helps in providing justice with the detection of the wrong information that is provided for the case study. For this reason, the plaintiffs are still suing the justice which helps in determining the breaching of the contract of duty. The breaching also shows the injury that must be recovered with the violation of the acts and thereby the case provides the appropriate ways with mentioning the justification of the case. The negligence of the damages also helps in overlooking the provision of the plaintiffs in this case. Three previous partners of Arthur Andersen, an audit firm were appointed by HIH as a part of their audit team. For the last ten years the people of Artur Andersen audit firm had made a lot of money through HIH by being a part of their auditors and thereby there is an established relationship present between the two firms. Andersen had earned about $8 million by auditing the books of HIH and along with that also provide different types of services to it for which made about $7 million. The fact that the two firms have been able to maintain a 10 year long professional relationship proves that they have been able to develop a strong relationship between each other. Having known personnel to handle the auditing process of a company proves to be very beneficial as they tend to give a report in favor of the company (Krenn, 2015). Therefore in this case, the personal relationship shared between the two firms can be considered as the reason for HIH taking the people of Andersens as part of t heir auditing team. Since Andersens have a very strong professional and personal relationship with HIH, they are bound to give a good report for it. The work of an auditing organisation offers and unbiased report of all the financial transactions that are made by the company and the consultancy firm is also expected to recommend in the different ways with the creation of concern for the company. Thereby the expectations also help in the increment of the high tax rates and also help in maximising the profitability of the organisation. The benefits also seemed to be holding the audition consultancy and the offering of the services that are seemed to creating and biasness towards the company. It also helps in the creation of the services that are seemed to be crucial for the organisation and henceforth it maintains the image of the company. The circumstances of this case presented in the case indicate that the company is not sticking to the basic ethical practices. The crucial reason behind this is the external auditing team which is needed to be unbiased towards he company and thereby it also helps in the creation of the impartial financial report for the company. With hiring the firm in an unethical manner, the company proved that the actual financial reports are made fake with the creation of the transactions which raise problems in the company and also created hurdles for the company (Madi, Ishak and Manaf, 2014). It is proved to a part of the violation of the ethical conducts and henceforth the demand of the independent investigation is made. In this case the crucial breakdown of HIH company takes place with the consideration of the future claims and thereby the main rationale of the Ramsays report represents the creation of the appropriate suggestion that are seemed to be requisite for the alterations. Henceforth the responsibility of the auditor is created for showing the actual position of the company in the market environment. The impact of the changes determines the rescheduling of the programs with adding values to the financial report of the organisation. it is made for the appropriate consideration of the capital and thereby the enhancement of the values are made in order to strengthen the credibility of the capital market. This also provides the recognition of the acts that are seemed to be helpful for accessing the credibility and the reliability of the report provided by the auditor.
